The 2017 Labor Government Budget introduced changes to the Land Tax Act that causes nearly all Australian citizens owning property in Queensland, who are overseas for 6 months or more in a financial year, to be subjected to a combined Land Tax (at a reduced threshold) as well as an Absentee Surcharge at 1.5% of the value of your land. Prisoners of the State.

Less Freedom of Choice for Queenslanders over other Australian States.
Less Freedom of Choice for All Queenslanders - That's right. Those who own property in Queensland and those who are considering owning a Queensland property are all affected.
Nobody can predict their future with certainty. Job opportunities, forced retirement, old age, suddenly medically unable to work again. Or, maybe you have been offered a once in a lifetime new overseas job for a few years?
Something that could have got you ahead years on your mortgage, and could have made put you in good stead for career opportunities/promotions back in Australia. Or you have wished to have a gap year in your job/career, retirement holiday - one that takes you overseas travelling and staying in countries abroad? Sounds great? Well, think again.
If you own a Queensland property then you freedom of choice has been ripped apart. You are now a slave to the government. You have been interned to the mainland for 6 months of the financial year or face the wrath of the Office of the State Treasury who will remind you that you will now need to pay up thousands of dollars for daring to stay a day over the curfew.
Wow! Do Queenslanders like these sort of restrictions forced upon them? Many just do not realise until their life circumstances change or they are planning a long trip away.😡
